Fading Memories

For the series "Fading Memories," which originally emerged as an exhibition tied to a performance on death and necrophilia commissioned by the Vermeylenfonds, questions quickly arose: What is death? What are memories? What is love? What questions come to mind?
Only after a prolonged thought process did the idea emerge to print the photos on metal plates, which I then allow to rust. The photos partially rust away, and in this manner, I could expand the theme. Other questions arise when viewing the works: What do I remember of my deceased relative, of a friend I haven't seen for a long time? Usually, these are only fragments; large parts have faded, and so too have the works rusted, faded away.
The impermanence of matter, the transition to something new, is thus emphasized. It is not that it is gone, for something remains, but it is no longer the same. It concerns the questions we all ask ourselves.
On this basis, I created this series for the Vermeylenfonds.
The series is indeed based on the book by Gabrielle Witkop, “Le Nécrophile,” and this influence is certainly still partially visible in the images, particularly in the attention to detail. However, gradually, it became something entirely different.
“Fading Memories” primarily deals with memories of people, loved ones, friends who have disappeared from our lives (either deceased or not seen for a long time). The memories gradually rust away, become vague, and transform into something else. The memories are partially deceptive, maturing into what we make of them in our minds over time.
